Garden Box Checkup

May 18, 2011

So, I braved the weather today (it has been raining for 4 days straight waterside in Connecticut), putting on my wellies (I love these boots because they keep out the ticks!), and heading to the lower 40 (it may not be that far away, but it seems like it). I was very pleased to see that the beating rain did not kill and of the plants (tomato, pepper, and cucumber) and that the garden boxes did not wash away into the harbor.

Lo and behold, there were spouts! Cute little green things that have grown from whatever I planted. I have to come clean here – in my planting fury, I didn’t mark on my map what I planted in which square. So, I have 32 squares of garden plants, and unless it’s cucumber (which I bought already started) or potato or carrot (which I planted in pots), I have no idea what is about to sprout. I think it might be radish, but, truthfully, I have no idea. All I know is it is green and has little leaves and IT’S GROWING! I guess I should have tamed my ADD when I was planting and taken the time to write down what I was planting, or do the Martha Stewart thing and print some nice signs for each box section (yeah, right after I make my own frosting and knit a shawl…).

So, someday soon, I will be forced to choose which of these little plant lives will live, since I did not pay any attention to the books or seed packages and did not plant them far enough apart. I know this because pretty much my planting style was just to pour the packages into the squares and cover them with some dirt. That’s science, right?
